HUSQVARNA TURF & TECH CONFERENCE SETS OUT THE FUTURE OF MODERN GOLF COURSE MANAGEMENT

Industry leaders, researchers and championship agronomists explore how technology can solve the turf industry’s key pain points and support better, more sustainable golf course management.

Husqvarna brought together leading figures from across golf and turf management at its inaugural Turf & Tech Conference to explore the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the sport. Although a relatively recent entrant to the golf sector, the 337-year-old manufacturer has a long history of developing innovative solutions for green space professionals and is using that expertise to support a more sustainable, resilient and technology-led future for golf course management.

Held at The Belfry on the eve of the 2026 Husqvarna British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo and opened by Husqvarna CEO, Glen Instone, the conference featured representatives from The R&A, DP World Tour, British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), Golf Course Association of Europe (GCAE), leading European golf venues, influential media and the international research community.

Husqvarna is determined to go beyond the role of a traditional corporate sponsor, using the platform afforded by its DP World Tour partnership to facilitate thought leadership and meaningful discussion across golf, ultimately contributing to a stronger and healthier industry. Discussions explored the changing role of the greenkeeper, the agronomic impact of lightweight robotic mowing, the future use of course data and the role technology can play in addressing the industry’s recruitment and sustainability challenges.

Yvette Henshall-Bell, President of Husqvarna Forest & Garden, highlighted the rapid adoption of autonomous turf-management technology. “Four years ago, our first robots built for golf courses rolled off the production line at Husqvarna’s UK centre for robotic mower manufacturing in Newton Aycliffe,” she said. “Today, they are cutting at more than 2,000 golf courses globally, including the fairways at The Belfry for the DP World Tour’s Husqvarna British Masters.

A central theme throughout the conference was the wider impact autonomous technology can have on course maintenance, including turf quality and playing conditions. Andrew Lees, Global Segment Manager for Professional Robotics at Husqvarna, highlighted findings from the company’s survey of golf courses already using the technology. “What really stood out was the impact on turf quality and playing conditions. We saw strong results across overall turf quality, density, uniformity and quality of cut, but more importantly, we also saw improvements in playability, which ultimately comes back to the golfer’s experience.”

The discussion also explored how autonomous technology can complement the expertise of greenkeeping teams. Jim Croxton, CEO of BIGGA, highlighted the potential for technology to create more productive and highly skilled roles within greenkeeping. “We aren’t seeing the technology replace people,” said Croxton. “We’re seeing people get more opportunities to be productive, collaborative and innovative while the robots get on with cutting the grass.”

Among these is a study led by Professor Paul Koch of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, investigating whether autonomous overnight dew removal can disrupt the development of dollar spot, a turfgrass disease becoming increasingly prevalent as climatic conditions change.

“We feel this research can reduce reliance on synthetic fungicides, which are becoming more expensive and harder for greenkeepers around the world to use,” said Professor Koch. “Because of the increasing prevalence of dollar spot, we need to look at alternative strategies.”

The discussions were given further relevance by the activity taking place on The Belfry’s Brabazon Course, where Husqvarna autonomous technology was helping prepare and maintain the playing surfaces for the 2026 Husqvarna British Masters.

Jonathan Snowball, Head of Pro Sales UK and British Masters project manager at Husqvarna, said: “These machines are proving themselves at championship level. If we can deliver this standard here, we can deliver it on any golf course around the world.”

During tournament week, 16 fairways were maintained using Husqvarna CEORA® robotic mowers, supported by autonomous solutions across the driving range and short-game practice area. The overnight programme was designed around the specific demands of a DP World Tour event, including precise cutting heights, consistent fairway definition and presentation tailored to television camera angles.

Daniel Lightfoot, Director of Sustainable Golf at The R&A, said: “Tournament golf provides one of the greatest opportunities to showcase the very best in sustainable turf management. It demonstrates how today’s course managers can deliver world-class playing surfaces that challenge the best players in the world while embracing responsible, efficient, and environmentally sustainable practices. Henshall-Bell concluded: “This conference demonstrated that the future of turf management will not be shaped by technology alone. It will be shaped by technology working alongside the expertise, experience and ambition of the people responsible for managing golf courses.”

Winners announced for the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards 2026

The winners of the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards 2026 have been crowned following two days of competition at Rockliffe in County Durham.

Organised by the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), Reesink Turfcare and Toro, the awards recognise the brightest emerging talent in the greenkeeping industry.

Alwoodley First Assistant and Myerscough College student Jake Rose won Student Greenkeeper of the Year, having been a runner-up in the Young category three years ago, with Essendon Country Club Greenkeeper Archie Raynham of Oaklands College claiming the Young award.

The pair emerged victorious from a talented pool of finalists after demonstrating their knowledge, practical ability and commitment to developing a successful career in greenkeeping.

The 37th staging of the awards brought together nine finalists who had progressed through online interviews earlier in the year.

During the national finals at Rockliffe, near Darlington, the candidates completed a series of practical and theoretical challenges, including seed and grass identification, presentations and interviews.

Their performances gave the judging panel an insight into their technical understanding, communication skills and enthusiasm for the profession.

Toby Smith, Deputy Course Manager at Redlibbets and Hadlow College student, was the runner-up in the main category, while Isle of Purbeck Apprentice and Sam Wells of Myerscough College claimed that spot in the Young category.

The Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards will return in 2027.

The future of turf management – BIGGA and Jacobsen announce FTMI class of 2026

The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) and Jacobsen have announced the delegates for the 2026 Future Turf Managers Initiative (FTMI).

Each year, 15 up-and-coming BIGGA members are chosen to participate in the training programme credited with developing some of the most influential course managers and head greenkeepers.

First hosted in 2013 as a two-day education event, FTMI has since expanded around the world, with similar schemes now operating in Spain, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand.

Deb Burnett, BIGGA’s Head of Professional Development, underlined the quality of this year’s cohort, who hail from clubs across the UK and represent a broad range of roles within the greenkeeping profession.

“FTMI continues to attract outstanding applications from ambitious BIGGA members who are already making a real impact at their clubs and within their regions,” she said.

“The class of 2026 reflects the strength and depth of talent coming through the industry, and we are excited to support them as they build the skills, confidence and networks that will help them take the next step in their careers.”

“FTMI is a cornerstone of Jacobsen’s commitment to building a bright future for the sport of golf and the greater golf industry,” said Barry McTavish, Vice President and General Manager for Ransomes Jacobsen Ltd.

“Alongside BIGGA, we are identifying and developing the next generation of leaders, to better equip and prepare them to manage our industry’s critical assets – our golf courses – responsibly, sustainably, and in a manner that supports the growth of our sport,” McTavish said.

The initiative has benefited over 200 BIGGA members, with many citing their FTMI experience as key to their development. Jethro Wilson, senior greenkeeper at Loch Lomond, is excited to join such esteemed company.

“Being selected for FTMI means a great deal to me,” he said. “Developing as a turf manager is something I’m passionate about, and this is a fantastic opportunity to learn from some of the best people in the industry while building relationships with like-minded professionals. I’m excited to make the most of every experience over the next year.”

The programme has been designed to provide practical tools and guidance to help candidates pursue their career aspirations. Working with professional trainers, mentors, Jacobsen and BIGGA staff, graduates gain a clear understanding of what the future holds and a realistic overview of the expectations that come with the role of manager.

Toby Smith, deputy course manager at Redlibbets, said: “When I found out I had been selected for FTMI I was very proud and excited. It was something that was recommended to me and I knew right away that it was a brilliant initiative and I definitely wanted to apply.

“I’m thrilled to have been selected and we have some great mentors. I’m really looking forward to working with everyone and pushing towards where I want to be, and making new friends and connections along the way.”

FTMI begins at Ransomes Jacobsen’s headquarters in Ipswich and is followed by a series of online education sessions before culminating in two days of education at BTME in January.

Candidates are selected based upon an anonymous judging criterion, with the panel gaining an insight into the achievements of each application, who must be educationally active on a national and regional level.

Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year 2026 finalists announced

The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) has announced the 10 hopefuls in with a shot at claiming the top prizes at the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards 2026.

The nominees, split between the Student Greenkeeper of the Year and Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year categories, represent golf clubs and colleges from across the country.

Launched in 1989, the awards, sponsored by Toro and Reesink Turfcare, have long recognised and rewarded some of the most promising talents in the industry, with many finalists going on to enjoy stellar careers.

The 2026 awards will take place at Rockliffe Hall in County Durham from 8-10 September, when the finalists will compete in a series of challenges designed to test their technical knowledge and passion for the greenkeeping profession.

BIGGA’s Head of Professional Development Deb Burnett said: “These awards continue to showcase the breadth of talent coming through the greenkeeping industry, and this year’s finalists are another outstanding group.

“Whether they are at the beginning of their careers or have already taken on significant responsibility within their teams, they have shown the commitment, knowledge and ambition that will help drive the profession forward.”

The Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year winner’s prize includes enrolment in an internationally recognised 10-week turf management remote study course at The Winter Turf School (University of Massachusetts), a one-week placement at a prestigious golf course in the UK or overseas, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Toro HQ in the United States.

“This year’s Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards attracted an impressive number of entries, and the quality of submissions was high, making the judging process more competitive than ever. As a result, those who have secured a place in the finals have achieved something truly noteworthy and should be congratulated for standing out among such a strong field of candidates.

Friends of First Green is a donation-led initiative designed to help BIGGA continue to grow First Green, the environmental science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education outreach programme that turns golf courses into outdoor classrooms.
